Bird flu hits Groningen poultry farm

26 February 2018 - Wouter Baan

Bird flu was diagnosed at a poultry farm in Oldekerk (Groningen) on Sunday 25 February. It concerns the type H5. All 36.000 animals are culled.

The Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality reports that it is probably the highly pathogenic variant. This means that the virus is highly contagious. Within a radius of 10 kilometers a transport ban has been announced on poultry, poultry manure and used litter.

Other companies
There are no other poultry farms within a radius of 1 kilometer around the affected farm. There are, however, 2 poultry farms within a radius of 3 kilometres; these are now being investigated.

The national confinement obligation is still in effect. This was instituted at the end of 2017, after bird flu was detected on a duck farm in Biddinghuizen (Flevoland).
