New German agriculture minister announced
German Chancellor Angela Merkel presented the candidates for the CDU ministerial posts to her government on Sunday, February 25. Julia Klöckner is put forward for the agricultural sector, making her the successor of the beloved Christian Schmidt.
In addition to Klöckner, the much-discussed Jens Spahn was also in the running for agriculture minister. He was eventually assigned the ministerial post for health. Klöckner already has political experience within the sector. In 'her' state of Rhineland-Palatinate she was previously State Secretary for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. She also led the agricultural working group for the CDU during coalition negotiations felt.be.

In a poll by news medium Agrar Heute, Klöckner emerged as the favorite, leaving Spahn behind. Klöckner's parents own a wine farm. She herself worked as editor-in-chief. According to the German agricultural sector, she has proven to be proficient with the agricultural portfolio. In 2002 she ended up in the Bundestag, where 5 years later she became the head of the agricultural working group for the CDU/CSU. Recently, she was even mentioned in the German media as the successor to Angela Merkel.

Beloved minister
Klöckner will take over from CSU politician Christian Schmidt, who has been Germany's agriculture minister since 2014. Schmidt was very loved among the German farmers, with whom Klöckner has a lot to live up to. However, her ministerial position still has to be approved by coalition partner SPD.
In November 2017, Schmidt came in discredit when, against the agreements, he voted to renew the glyphosate license. With the German 'yes', glyphosate gained the necessary predominance to extend the license for 5 years. The one-man action earned him many compliments from farmers, but also led to a strong reprimand from Merkel.
