The Flevokust Haven, a new port near Lelystad, has been ready for use since this week. Despite the fact that the port is not yet completely ready, the first ship can moor this week. The port is a godsend for agricultural entrepreneurs.
A quay of 200 meters is currently available for cargo ships. The port will be completed in the coming months, so that a quay of 400 meters in total can be put into use in the summer.
'It saves time and money'
The exporters and traders of agricultural products are happy with the new port. "We notice that Dutch traffic is becoming increasingly congested, with transshipment in the ports also taking a lot of time. Thanks to this new port, we can transport larger volumes to Rotterdam at the same time, which saves a lot of time and money," says Erik Waterman, co-founder. director of Waterman Onions, viz.
Aquarius was the first customer for the loading of containers at the Flevo coast, which was still at the Maxima site at the time. The port is also important to Jan van Hoogen, general manager at Agrico. "This port is nearby and is also a part of the service for exporters. However, the products from Groningen will still be shipped in Groningen."
Strategic location
Edwin Bos, senior project leader for the province of Flevoland: "The port has a lot of potential for agricultural products from Flevoland, but due to the strategic location of the terminal also from the north of the country. A daily service will be maintained to the port of Rotterdam and The port of Antwerp will also be called twice a week."
There are still possibilities for expansion in the future. For example, the quay of the Flevokust Haven can be extended and the business park can eventually be expanded to 43 hectares.
