Avoid trade war

US farmers appeal to Trump

15 March 2018 - Wouter Baan

Farmers in the United States (US) fear that US President Donald Trump's trade policy is hurting their export position. That is why the advocacy group Farmers for Free Trade has launched a campaign on American television, in which they make an urgent appeal to Trump.

De advertising campaign will air for the next 4 weeks on popular US television channels, including Fox News and CNN. The reason is the fact that various countries are threatening reprisals (on corn, soybeans and meat) as Trump protects the US steel industry by introducing tariffs.

Charges are devastating
During the ad, Michelle Erickson-Jones, a cattle rancher and grain grower in Montana, explains that the American agricultural sector cannot survive without exports. "A trade policy that restricts US exports is devastating the US agricultural economy." That is why she calls on the president to protect rather than restrict free trade.

Max Baucus, a former Montana senator and now president of Farmers for Free Trade, said many American farmers are concerned about what is going on in Washington. "When the US goes to war with its trading partners, the farmers pay the price."
