Annual figures for 2017

ABZ Diervoeding benefits from switching livestock farmers

20 March 2018 - Wouter Baan

ABZ Animal Nutrition grew organically by 2017% in 7 to 624.000 tons of compound feed. An excellent result, says director Marcel Roordink. The addition of 153 new customers is particularly striking.

The turnover for 2017 amounted to more than €200 million, which is a record for the cooperative. Of that amount, €2 million in profit ultimately remains, of which €800.000 is paid out to the members. This is done via a supplementary payment of €1,50 per tonne of compound feed. The volume gain results from the growing number of members. That increased from 1.538 to 1.654 members.

Thanks to good years, the pig farmer was able to switch again

Growth in the pig sector
The volume increased rapidly, especially in the pig sector, to 176.0228 tons (+20%). According to Roordink, this is because pig farmers have had good years. This allowed them to pay off overdue payment obligations at their existing feed factory and possibly switch to a new supplier. "That happened regularly in 2017, and we benefited from it." However, the volume of pig feed sold at ABZ is still below the 2013 level (178.348 tons).

According to the ABZ director, the growth comes from the regions surrounding the factories (Nijkerk, Eindhoven, Leusden, Markelo and Stroobos). "We try to make a difference on the farm with a regional approach." Roordink says that ABZ focuses on so-called family businesses that want to move forward. ABZ serves these companies with specific feed, but with guidance. "From that point of view, we consciously do not participate in the platform: MijnVoer.nl," says Roordink.

Still small in bio
The share of organic feed is relatively small (0,8% of the total). Roordink does see growth opportunities in this segment. According to the director, growing sales of loose raw materials is also an emerging trend. In 2017, this volume grew by 10% to 93.730 tons.
