RCC does not understand message

Bionext disputes veracity of statement

The organic branch organization Bionext does not accept the decision made by the Advertising Code Committee regarding their promotional video about organic farming. According to director Bavo van den Idsert, the advertising watchdog does not understand what hidden costs are.

The Advertising Code Committee (RCC) judged Tuesday 3 April that the statements Bionext makes about organic farming are formulated too absolutely and are insufficiently substantiated. In the animation, the trade association tries to make it clear that conventional agriculture has many hidden costs. Organic farming does not have that, it says.

The environmental impact is deliberately left out of the picture

'Advertising Code Commission doesn't get it'
During the  reaction inform Bionext that the RCC is clearly unfamiliar with the concept of hidden costs. Director Bavo van den Idsert: "The RCC does not use the concept of hidden costs well. During the session, the magnifying glass was placed on the fact that organic farming also involves commuting. Every consumer understands that. It is about the environmental impact that consciously is kept out of the picture.

"According to the organization, consumers understand that organic farming has costs. The hidden costs (water pollution, CO2 emissions and impact on insects), that's where the pain lies. "For the consumer, these are hidden costs, because they are not included in the retail price" , says Van den Idsert. "It is ironic that a video that exposes a form of deception would itself be misleading because the advertising watchdog wants more substantiation. We think that the consumer sees through the message perfectly. This should have guided the ruling."

no conviction
The director says it was not their intention to condemn conventional farmers. "There are plenty of conventional farmers with a heart for sustainability. We want to demonstrate that organic is aimed at not unnecessarily burdening the environment."

It is not clear whether Bionext decides to appeal with this reaction. The organization could not be reached for comment.

I do not believe that the co2 emissions of, for example, a tractor on an organic farm are less than on a conventional farm.
In fact, they more often drive through the crop with a hoeing rig.

unbelievable that bionext would be featured like this. they say they have nothing against regular agriculture, but by challenging this they are sending a different signal. Namely: we are superior, do not care about any statement whatsoever and that with this we give our members (the organic farmer they work for) in a difficult to put up with their neighbors and the community in which they live and live doesn't matter to us. It looks like a cult with a cult leader (director) who thinks he is above matter and truth. .

How about an average of half a yield or less, more loss due to pests or illness, stirring the soil countless times with machines, importing entire tribes from Eastern Europe to weed weeds for a few euros per hour. And all this with heavily subsidized machinery and storage. In our province of Groningen, these moral knights are already getting everything for half the money!! Volksverlakerij concerns me, and the attitude of the promotion association typifies exactly how these organic colleagues glorify themselves compared to other farmers.

If an organic farmer has a potato plot close to that of a conventional grower, the disease pressure is many times higher than normal because the organic plots are often completely under search.

These "hidden" costs are also not named by this organization. The advertising committee is right, and this is another guiding informational advertisement that misleads people again.

The biggest producers of fake news are these kinds of agencies and you wonder what the social value is of this kind of suggestive lie companies.

The hidden costs are also that a common neighbor has to fight disease in onions and potatoes many times more often.

In 2016, Bionext received €259.889,75 in subsidies from the common agricultural policy. They also have an ANBI status with the tax authorities (public benefit institution). What general purpose does this organization have? Is this organization not for profit?

If the conventional farmer comments on his organic colleague, that is not allowed and we must continue together, and not see each other as competitors.

If the organic farmer / interest group has misleading comments on his conventional farmer, we should just take it.

@Peter. The provos and hippies from the 60s and 70s have established themselves well in politics and within government agencies and are secretly fooling society and screwing up the well-meaning and hard-working citizens. Cock left, fill right pockets!

Bavo what are the hidden costs of using copper oxychloride and the damage to soil life? And falsely informing consumers?
shoemakers1 5 April 2018
read an article recently that stated that something like 86 residues could be found in organic products, is already something for a sector that claims to be free from spraying agents

As far as CO2 emissions are concerned, I do see some hidden costs. The tillage of the soil is minimally the same but more often more due to more ridging and hoeing. All this for sometimes less than half of the usual revenue. In addition, burners are often used for weed control and foliage destruction, which quickly costs tens of liters of gas per hectare with associated emissions. Count out your profit

Bionext does not understand what a ruling by the RCC is. No, no, it can't be that hard.

very striking was this reaction from someone on twitter today: "According to @BionextTweets the average consumer understands their message, but the rcc does not! That sounds exactly as plausible as the message they are proclaiming!"

It is very typical for bionext to defend its statements by saying: the rcc has not understood what hidden costs are. while

1. the environmental committee of the rcc. has had a month to look at this and has done so extensively.
2. I have explained in detail in what the rcc calls "the complainant's pleading" what is meant by hidden costs. (can be read here: https://bloggendeboer.com/2018/03/08/102/) This memorandum was discussed during the hearing and we go back to the source from where the whole concept of hidden costs comes from.

It is a lame story of a club of marketing people who do not want or cannot admit that, in accordance with the judgment of the committee, they are simply wrong with their advertising. Not very surprising, but very disappointing.
