Countus Arable Farm Index

Arable farming markets find their way to the top

9 April 2018 - Niels van der Boom

The rising prices for the various arable products mean that the Countus Arable Farm Index is also pointing its head upwards. In recent weeks, the price has been able to make a small profit.

De Countus Arable Farm Index reached its highest point for this year (so far) in the last week of March. This marks the peak at the end of January. We have to go back to week 40, the first days of October, for an even higher index. At the beginning of April, the Index again registered a new rise, which is most likely to continue.

At the beginning of April, the Arable Farm Index rises again

The April contract on the potato futures market, among other things, managed to maintain itself at a slightly higher level during the month of March. While the price level in February was still around €5 per 100 kilos, it is now around €6 per 100 kilos.

Higher onion prices
The average stock market quotation for coarse yellow seed onions is also recovering. In week 5, an average price of €7,25 per 100 kilos was still noted. It then moved up increments, reaching a high of $8,75 in week 12, the highest price level since mid-August.

Finally, the Index is benefiting from higher wheat prices on the Matif in Paris. Since week 12, the May contract has been experiencing a stable price increase. On Friday, April 6, the stock market closed at €167 per tonne. The highest level in 1 month.

Low level
Despite an upturn in the Arable Farming Index, the sector barometer remains at a very low level. An extreme low (such as in 2005) has been avoided, but we have to go back to 2009 for such an index. Since its inception in 2004, the Index has been 8 times above the 100 point average and 6 times below it.
