Tereos, the largest sugar beet processor in France, has a final beet price of €18 per tonne on April 28,40. This is 14% higher than the price announced when the contracts were signed.
This average forecast price includes the base price, premiums paid for the past campaign, and the interest on stocks. In the context of the end of quotas and the abolition of the minimum price in Europe, Tereos has proposed a contract model based on a minimum price of €25 per tonne.
Also in the 2018 campaign, the 12.000 members of the Tereos cooperative will receive a guaranteed minimum price of €25 per tonne, to protect members from the high price volatility during the first two years of market liberalisation.
Best campaign ever
It was previously announced that Tereos the best campaign ever has behind it. During the 145 campaign days, more than 20 million tons of beets were processed, an increase of 30% compared to the previous harvest. This was done in 2017 on an acreage of 215.000 hectares of beets, considerably more than the entire Dutch acreage.
In the Netherlands, Royal Cosun beet growers were paid €45,62 per tonne for 2017. In the Netherlands, a quite lower price expected for sugar beet. "I expect that we will reach the €40 per tonne, or perhaps not at all. In any case, we will remain above the base price of 2017 (€32,50 per tonne)", said Dirk de Lugt, chairman of the board. of management of Cosun.
The beets for the coming campaign are already up in France:
