The sowing of the sugar beets made a huge difference in week 15. Almost 80% of the beets were sown last week, compared to 35% the week before. The last beets will probably be sown next week.
Almost half of the sugar beets were sown last week, but the separation between the north and the south keeps existing. While almost all sugar beet has been sown in the northern provinces, this is significantly less in the south. In Flevoland, almost all the seed is in the ground. This is evident from the beet statistics of Sugar Union.
The Zeeland islands are the furthest behind: 50% has been sown there. Nevertheless, this means that a major step has been taken, because rain significantly hindered the sowing activities. Last week the percentage was still at 3%. Also in the past weekend there were showers in the south that delayed sowing.
late season
In North and South Holland, a major blow has also been struck. Where more than 10% was sown last week, 80% of the acreage has now been sown. Sowing started late compared to last year, in 2017 almost everything had already been sown by week 15. The good weather not only helps to speed up sowing, but also the germination of the sugar beets.
The sowing of sugar beets has almost been completed in Germany, according to figures from the German beet institute LIZ. Especially in the east of Germany they have come a long way; in Brandenburg and Könnern, sowing was completed last week and in other growing areas, the weekend yield was between 57% and 78%. However, with a view to favorable spring weather, this will quickly increase towards 100%, LIZ expects.
