30 to 50 millimeters of precipitation

Flooding halts arable farming

30 April 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

Particularly in the south and east of the Netherlands, a lot of precipitation has again fallen. In some places it even involves amounts of 30 to 50 millimeters.

In April there is usually an average of 40 millimeters of rain, but that now fell in a few hours. The soil was generally dry, but is now quickly becoming saturated in many places.

Expectation
The rain meant that growers had to postpone planting the potatoes. Heavy amounts of precipitation and strong winds are also expected for tonight. It is expected to become sunnier and warmer from Liberation Day.

About 50 millimeters fell in the province of Limburg. As a result, the potato ridges are partly under water.

Farmers therefore choose, for example, to spray their machines clean.

Severe weather also had an impact in Belgium and France last weekend. Mudslides, snow and tornadoes have been reported. A tornado is said to have destroyed a poultry farm in the south of Belgium. Hail also caused considerable damage.

The snow is clearly visible on the snow-covered rapeseed.
