Legs further delayed

Flooding continues to affect southwest

1 May 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

After the large amounts of rain from Sunday to Monday, quite a bit of rain fell last night. This poses serious problems in several places. Again, the planting time of the main crop of potatoes is shifted backwards.

Many arable farmers believe that the planters in parts of the country can no longer be used throughout the week. In general, it is expected that the country will not be able to return to the country until next week. In the southern regions; such as Limburg, Zeeland and parts of South Holland, but the most rain has also fallen in the far north.

The situation is worst in the south and southwest of the Netherlands. On top of the amount that Sunday on Monday had already fallen, heavy rain has again fallen in the southwest and it is raining steadily. Consultants talk about more than 60 millimeters in total.

Cultivation advisors are now also encountering flooded plots. Down the great rivers people were already lagging behind with planting and sowing work. Partly because of the still wet (sub)soil.

To be patient
The situation is also bad in the province of Limburg. More than 10 millimeters fell again last night, on top of the more than 40 to 50 millimeters that had already fallen. Arable farmers in that region expect to be able to return to the field next week at the earliest.

In North Holland, more than 40 millimeters has fallen in some places. In Flevoland, 25 to 30 millimeters have fallen since Sunday. Arable farmers have to be patient with going out onto the land, but the situation in Flevoland is not that bad in relative terms.

Expectation
Tuesday morning, May 1, there is still a lot of rain in several places. The expectation of DCA Agroweer is that the weather is improving from the south. In the afternoon it should be dry and the sun could even shine. There may be a little rain on Wednesday.

It will most likely remain dry for the rest of the week. There is quite a lot of sun and the temperature during the day goes towards 20 degrees. However, the question is whether the soil dries up quickly as a result. There is, however, a chance of frost on the ground in the night from Thursday to Friday.
