Weather causes delay

Beet sowing Europe is almost complete

2 May 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

Almost all sugar beets are sown in the Netherlands, just like in other Western European countries. Many beet plants are already upstairs, but the work has been delayed due to the weather conditions.

In week 16, significant steps were taken in the Netherlands with the sowing of sugar beets. From the beet statistics of Suiker Unie shows that 98% has been sown. Only in the area 'Northern sand' less than 95% has been sown. A major blow has been struck, especially below the rivers.

In the Netherlands, it took a little longer to sow the beets this year, partly due to the wet weather conditions. There is talk of an average of 6 to 7 days before the first sugar beets emerged. The stir of the past few days has also resulted in the ground being quite closed.

Germany and Belgium
In Germany all sugar beets were in the ground at the end of April, even though no beet had been sown at the beginning of April. Almost all sugar beets have also been sown in Belgium and many crops are now well developed. The rain of the past few weeks was even welcome in some places in Belgium.

Backlog in France
In France they were quite behind with the sowing; at the beginning of April, the delay was up to 20 days. Nevertheless, most sugar beets have now been sown and a large part has emerged. Some areas have been severely affected by the rain. Just like in the Netherlands, more than 60 millimeters fell in those areas. Night frost is reported for next week, but temperatures of 2 degrees are also expected for the next 20 weeks.

The first sugar beets have now also emerged in Poland; usually they are already up at the beginning of April. The acreage in Poland will be comparable to 1 year ago. This brings the acreage to approximately 230.000 hectares, despite the low sugar beet price last year.
