Severe weather in early potato area Germany

17 May 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn - 32 comments

A tornado has locally caused considerable damage in the German Schwalmtal near Mönchengladbach (in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia). There was also a thunderstorm area with hail, which caused flooding and damage to potato fields.

The area is about 20 minutes from the Dutch border at Roermond (Limburg) and is an important area for the cultivation of early potatoes. Flooded fields are reported by several farmers.

Ferdinand Buffen, director of the German potato trading house Weuthen, reports that the damage caused by the tornado is not too bad in the potato fields. "There has been damage over a track of 500 meters wide. This makes it very localized as far as the early potatoes are concerned." There are sheds where the roofs are off blown.

Especially rain damage
However, the greatest damage was caused by the heavy hailstorms and large amount of precipitation† This was not only the case in the German area, but also in the province of Limburg. In a short time, 30 to 40 millimeters of rain fell in the German area and Limburg. Several potato plots were empty. According to local farmers, a lot of damage has been done locally.

I think the early ones are elsewhere...
rene 17 May 2018
no, the bulk of the early ones are in that area where things are seriously wrong. take the big problem with rotten seed potatoes in the south/west of the Netherlands that are lost and all together there is no large flow of potatoes

And Flanders 6% less, and EU 2 to 3 weeks later and the ongoing drought in central Europe, ... Processors are already switching your investments into cash, because this year you will have to pay.

Dream on, again far too much has been planted.
Grower 18 May 2018
I thought I would plant less like this this year. But I have to transplant 30 ha. So I also miss legs 5 ha more. But we still have 15 ha less.
Drent 18 May 2018
I had seed potatoes left and so I planted some more, hopefully I guessed correctly

Folks, calm down. Nothing has happened yet. Why are you blowing everything up like that? Last year everyone was euphoric until the end of July, when it started to rain and the fun was soon over... don't sell the bear's skin until it's shot.

still see different plant combinations around touring today. either farmers who plant too much, or ran out of planters (which I doubt), or first have to beg their landlord for lack of cash, or none of that, but just wait for the best moment according to the soil.
who will say?

When I see the radar, it's now bingo in South Limburg again....
Or is it still okay?
Berry 23 May 2018
My neighbor is not the only one I see today. At least 5 colleagues drive a harvester
Farmer 23 May 2018
What area are you in Berry?
Berry 23 May 2018
Head of North Holland. Heavy rain fell here in mid-April. On a number of plots, the potatoes have suffocated because of the compacted ground.

We also have water damage. Some plots were completely submerged by 20%. Other plots 10%. Fortunately some plots have no water damage. On average 5% no yield. and 25% light water damage expects a yield of 80%. All in all 10% damage and will not be a top yield this year.

in the city 85 mm fell at 1.5 hours: everything below
in the field that also fell: everything under WITH a lot of damage

Nice rain here in the Netherlands last night, unfortunately a bit too much in some places, but that's what you have with thunderstorms, hopefully the damage to the crops is not too bad. Here in m-zeeuws flanders everything is growing fast, the nature has to be sprayed on many perc from now on for the plague, wheat comes in the ear, maize bursts out of the ground. The season has already caught up. Everything is looking great, except for a few parcels of onions. Very growing weather next week.

Come from behind the geraniums and you can see it better Anton. But very local that rain the last potatoes have just been planted and in many places it's just dry

True, but those are only a few %, but at the end of the day they can be just as good, or perhaps better than the ones who already have to spray. But you are still young, and have not experienced much yet. Come all quite okay with the kg.
Agri 25 May 2018
In the north it may rain, just bloody dry. Raining a full bowl of beepers next week

Central Zeeland 40-65 mm of rain tonight.
Flooding again and a number of plots already had water damage after legs.
Good luck to those affected by it.

Plots where too much water has fallen remains a problem plot, can be happy if you get 75% of the normal yield Anton. Areas where flooding has occurred this year is steadily increasing. So that super yield from the other lots may not make up for the gap in those other lots. Do you need to know as an old hand or do you have a double hat on?

Hope Anton gets the full blast tonight then he'll talk differently with his stupid bullshit, think he still has a job next door at some chip factory.
Henk 26 May 2018
it's not all that great in the early days. many empty places also where there has been no water. The main harvest is going to cause a lot of worries outside that a lot has already been planted, but a very modest harvest will come. certainly not what is needed very special spring..

Yesterday morning 25mm, today they were milling, and you don't have to worry about me, I'm retired, and have taken care of myself, so for me it's a hobby, and that's really fun.

Lovely cycling weather here, but before we leave I can reassure Hannes, because we haven't had a drop, so those more than 20 from last week have brought about enormous growth. I can follow Hannes, because with nature. on contract, you should not miss a plant.
Good luck Hannes, you'll be able to use it. We are going to leave for a good 60 km.

If this happens to you individually, it can be a disaster, you wouldn't wish that on anyone.
