The Netherlands agrees

Diquat and thiram not re-approved

18 May 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn - 6 comments

The Netherlands will agree to the Commission's proposals not to re-approve the substances thiram and diquat. The European Commission will take a final decision on this on Thursday 24 May.

This is a periodic reassessment, which, according to the European Commission's proposal, should not be extended. diquat has been assessed as a candidate for substitution, according to a report by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

The reason for the non-approval is an unfavorable environmental profile and unacceptable risks for local residents and birds. The Board for the Authorization of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb) endorses the risks reported by EFSA. Diquat is used, among other things, in the cultivation of potatoes and flower bulbs.

Thirami
According to the Ctgb and EFSA, the active substance Thiram also does not have to be re-approved. This substance is used in plant protection products for seed treatment.

Agriculture Minister Carola Schouten recognizes the consequences of the disappearance of the substances. That is why she is working on an extension of a package of measures based on non-chemical agents, basic substances and low-risk agents.

Did the European Commission decide what to do with Diquat? Have they ruled to extend the registration? or have they ruled out?

The European Commission has not yet been able to take a decision. There was no majority for an extension, but also not for a re-admission.

when would they come up with the decision?

All approved products in the Netherlands have been tested and approved by the ctbgals, the users work according to the label and the dosage ring, the gbm products are 100% safe

Diquat has been used for many decades and therefore has the most practical experience, which is special that it now suddenly appears that the drug is no longer safe. Leave your mind on the bedside table, there is no point in drawing any more, this is the new reality.
