Hail and thunderstorms

Local severe weather hits the south of the Netherlands

22 May 2018 - Niels van der Boom

Severe local thunderstorms bring large amounts of rain and hail in the south of the Netherlands. Nearly 50 millimeters fell in some places in South Limburg. A heavy shower can also fall in North Brabant. However, the differences are large.

On Monday 21 May, a heavy shower of rain fell in the south of Limburg. In the hilly landscape this quickly leads to problems. When so much rain falls in a short period of time, soil washes off the plots and onto the roads. This turns them into a mudslide, as can be seen on various videos on social media.

50 millimeter
According to Buienradar, almost 22 millimeters of rain fell in a short time on Tuesday, May 50 in the extreme south. Hetweeractueel.nl shows 36 millimeters of precipitation around Sittard. Red spots in Belgium and Germany are also visible on the radar. There was also a large amount last week stir.

Also fell in some places hail† including around Valkenburg. The heaviest showers are now between Antwerp and Eindhoven and west of Nijmegen-Arnhem.The rain in South Limburg is causing problems in the potato fields.
