Belgium as an example

Parliamentary questions about neonicotinoids derogation

24 May 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn - 1 reaction

Maurits von Martels (CDA) has asked agriculture minister Carola Schouten to respond to the fact that Belgium is going to request a derogation for neonicotinoids in sugar beet cultivation.

In the message op Boerenbusiness it was reported that the Belgian minister of agriculture in Brussels will ask for a derogation. Von Martels: "I would like our minister to follow this example. As long as there are not enough alternatives available for growers, the application for derogation is certainly justified."

Request from LTO Arable Farming
In the Netherlands, Jaap van Wenum (chairman of LTO Akkerbouw) has indicated that he will submit a request to Schouten in the short term. He wants an exemption from the use of neonicotinoids in the cultivation of sugar beets.

The French agriculture minister has also been called upon by the French growers' organization to do the same. A ban on neonicotinoids costs an average yield of 12% and in extreme cases as much as 50%, the French organization reported.
