Energy consumption from renewable sources in 2017 amounted to 6,6% of total energy consumption. It is an increase of 10%, compared to 1 year earlier. The largest increase is visible in energy consumption from the sun, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands.
The energy consumption from the sun rose by 31% last year. The capacity of solar panels for solar power increased by 800 megawatts to 2.900 megawatts, a record. In addition, energy from wind also increased by 15%. This was mainly due to the large number of wind turbines that were placed at sea in the course of 2016.
Biomass is increasing
Also the consumption off bio transport fuels has risen sharply. At 61%, biomass is the largest source of renewable energy. Compared to last year, its use has increased by 8%. Consumption for transport in particular increased (+30%). This is related to an increase in the obligation to supply renewable energy for transport.
It is striking, however, that Cor Pierik, agriculture spokesman for CBS, stated earlier in a 'BB Facts' that the popularity of green energy is not necessarily increasing. Watch that interview here.
