'Agricultural budget must not fall further'

31 May 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

According to the European Parliament, the savings in the European agricultural budget are higher than the European Commission has proposed. According to the MPs' calculations, the budget would fall not by 5%, but by 15%.

The European Parliament: "There must be no further be cut back on the European agricultural budget." In a resolution on Wednesday 30 May, Parliament urged member states to maintain support for farmers. According to MEPs, the presentation of the budget is more positive than reality.

Earlier it appeared that the European Commission has reduced the budget to €365 billion. At the time, CDA MEP Annie Schreijer-Pierik already responded dissatisfied. She states that the reduction at farm level can have major consequences for the farmer.

Not even lowering
In the meantime, many organizations and representatives of the people have expressed their disagreement with the reduction in the budget. For example, the Prime Minister of Hungary, Victor Orban, threatens to block the EU budget if the agricultural sector is cut. Agriculture minister Carola Schouten has not yet allowed herself to be tempted to make such strong statements, she only wants to do this once the negotiations have started.
