Escharen plot escapes heavy rain showers

31 May 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

The plot with Innovators in Escharen (East Brabant), despite the heavy rainfall in the province of North Brabant, has so far escaped large amounts of rain. There is no water on the plot yet.

The potatoes were planted very late (only on 9 May). They surfaced at the end of May and the turnout initially seems to be good. The 5,3-hectare plot with sandy soil (3% silt) had beets as pre-fruit. The plot has an organic matter content of 1,9% and a pH of 5,6. In addition, the plot is located on a forest edge and is not drained.

operations
At the beginning of April, a basic fertilization of fattening pig manure of 35 cubic meters per hectare was given. The main tillage was done at the beginning of May: plowing was done with a furrow packer. Shortly afterwards, the seed bed preparation was done with an 'all-in-one system'. A front cultivator and a cup planter were used. The potatoes were planted at a distance of 32 centimeters from each other.

The main photo shows that the potatoes are well moistened and that the Innovators are emerging. This photo was taken on May 28, 2018.
