What is the drought in Europe doing?

June 29, 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

Everyone knows that it is currently dry and the irrigation systems are running at full speed. In addition, it makes little sense to speculate about what exactly the drought will do to the crop and the market. But, what exactly is the current state of affairs regarding the drought in Europe?

In large parts of the Netherlands it has been a while dry† Precipitation maps show that it even concerns the largest part of the Netherlands; only in the east of the country has a reasonable amount of rain fallen in the past month. According to the KNMI, the month of June is in the top 10 of driest months since 1906, when the measurements started.

It is expected that it will remain dry and warm in the coming period, with lots of sun. This has to do with the high pressure area over Northern Europe. That area ensures that the Netherlands will have to process a northeasterly wind in the coming days and that wind will take dry and warm air with it.

The crop was rooted better last year

Drought continues
It will probably remain dry and warm until Sunday 8 July. The dry weather is causing unrest among arable farmers, but also among livestock farmers is starting to become unrest. The drought is also detrimental to grass growth. The feed trade expect more demand in the short term, because there is not enough grass.

However, it is not only dry in the Netherlands. Drought is also reaching extremes in Flanders. There has been virtually no rain in the past 2, and it will remain dry for the next few days. In Flanders, there is also talk about through washing in the potatoes, because high temperatures (up to above 30 degrees) had already been reached in May. Since the ground was not yet covered at that time, this is not expected to remain without consequences.

less rooted
Guy Depraetere of the Algemeen Boerensyndicate (ABS) tells Nieuwsblad.be that crops in Flanders are having a hard time. According to him, it was also very dry last year, but by then the plants were already well rooted. Now the spring was wet, so it was not possible to sow until later. It's too early to estimate the extent of the damage, but he expects the worst is yet to come.

To put the drought in the Netherlands into perspective, we can look at Poland. In large parts of Poland it is extremely dry. In Germany, too, the grain harvest is expected to considerably lower will turn out because of the drought.

United Kingdom
In addition, it is also unusually dry and warm in the United Kingdom. Farmers in eastern Britain reported to the BBC that they have had no rain for 30 days. The situation is not yet critical, but the arable farmers indicate that the yield potential will certainly not be achieved. The precipitation in June according to hetweeractueel.nl.
