Extreme drought affects crops in EU

2 July 2018 - Niels van der Boom - 1 reaction

An extremely early harvest in many European countries is the result of the ongoing drought. Records are being broken in many countries and crops are groaning and groaning under high temperatures.

In northwestern Europe, but also in Central and Eastern European countries, it is bone dry† France is perhaps an exception, because there were still regular thunderstorms. However, northern France is spared precipitation. Most rain falls along the coast and in the south of the country. For the next 3 months, the French weather service Meteo France expects a weather type that will be drier and sunnier than average.

Irrigation ban
In Germany, grain crops are irreparable in many places signed due to the drought. Even in the areas where there was water in May and early June, it is now dry. The United Kingdom, where it is normally quite mild, is also experiencing major drought on the east coast. There is now talk of a ban on irrigation in the important (potato) growing regions. More and more Dutch water boards are announcing a ban on irrigating with surface water.

Potato Futures Market
Monday morning 2 July opened the potato futures market at €18,70 to quickly push through to €20. It is dry in all important growing regions. All eyes are on the situation after July 15. Will there be significant rainfall and can the crops benefit from this?

Scandinavia is experiencing one of the driest years on record. There was little rain all year round.

It is also dry in the United Kingdom. The grain harvest starts very early. In eastern England there is talk of a ban on irrigation.

Ireland is usually a country with a lot of precipitation. The lack of water is now also visible here. The barley harvest has started.

There is also a risk of fire due to the dry weather.

The winter wheat harvest has already started in central France.

Irrigation reels are currently not available in the Netherlands.

It is also dry in Wallonia. The first flax has now been drawn.

In large parts of Flanders it is now extremely dry (code yellow). The government is calling on people to use water sparingly.
