Will Trump Implement $505 Billion Tax?

20 July 2018 - Kimberly Bakker - 4 comments

US President Donald Trump says he is ready to introduce additional tariffs on Chinese goods. This involves import duties worth $505,50 billion. Trump made this known in an interview with American TV channel CNBC.

Trump's answers, in a broadcast with the American TV channel CNBC, would mean that almost all Chinese imports to the United States (US) are taxed.

'Right for our country'
Trump says in the interview that he is not doing this for politics. "It is the right thing for our country. We have been scammed by China for a long time," said the president. So far, the US has taxed an amount of $34 billion worth of Chinese commodities with import duties. This amount is expected to be increased by $16 billion.

The Chinese government responded on Trump's actions by also introducing tariffs on US products; this also involves an amount of $34 billion. The US exported $2017 billion worth of goods to China in 129,9, according to figures from the US Census Bureau.

If President Trump decides to introduce $505,50 billion in tariffs, it will be difficult for China to come up with an equivalent counter-reaction.

Import tariffs restore the competitiveness of "local" industries. So employment and factories that pay taxes. 3x profit: more tax revenue, more tax money and less unemployment. 4th profit the environment, less transportation of goods. Citizens pay more for products, but much less in taxes, and are probably happier. Big losers are the multinationals, but it was about time.

The little workman has to pay for the costs! Because he eventually buys the product.

I completely agree with the Americans, they can afford it and it makes them more independent from abroad. The fact that the whole world is falling over them immediately indicates who benefited the most from free trade.... but in NL we also lost our own Fokker, Philips, V&D, and many other traditional Dutch companies after the large-scale introduced free trade . Are we so happy and proud of that? It only makes us more dependent on low-wage countries and our own interests are diluted or snowed under pressure from other 'European partners'.

If president fails completely, arguing with Russia will not work either and no one still believes in it.

Calf, I think you're confusing Obama and Trump here. Your response is exactly the same as the other one.
