Rain does not relieve desiccated Europe

30 July 2018 - Niels van der Boom - 1 reaction

In mainland Europe, last weekend's rain has not improved the situation. Only in the United Kingdom (UK) did significant rain fall in some places. In the Netherlands it did not go further than a few millimeters.

The large arable areas in the Netherlands hardly benefited from the rain last weekend. The only advantage is that the temperature has decreased slightly. In the southwest of the country, between 1 and 8 millimeters fell, just like in Flevoland. Locally, slightly more water fell in North Holland. The northeast remained almost completely dry.

(Text continues below the chart)In many places no more than a few millimeters of rain fell.

Lots of rain in England
Rain is also negligible in Belgium and Germany. At our southern neighbors the counter got stuck at a few millimeters and the precipitation deficit continues to rise. The only country to experience a significant amount of rain was the UK. Locally, the sum that is normally recorded over the whole of July fell in a few hours. This was accompanied by thunder and heavy wind gusts.

The mercury did not rise above 28 degrees Celsius for the first time on Saturday, July 25 on the British Isle (about July). Rain fell all over the country, and in Northern Ireland. In the eastern arable region it was not that bad in relative terms, although the precipitation amount here rose to a good 40 millimetres.

Dutch Crop tour
Also the plots with Innovator, which participate in the Boerenbusiness Crop tour, have received little rain. 13 millimeters fell on the Fijnaar plot. The plot in Bocholtz is in second place with almost 10 millimeters. Half of the measured plots do not go further than 2 millimeters. Follow crop growth on the Crop tour page.

New heat wave?
Temperatures will rise again this week in northwestern Europe. In the UK, values above 30 degrees Celsius are expected again. This has already been the case in Germany this week, with the mercury rising locally again to 36 degrees Celsius. In the Netherlands, the values are still below that and a splash of rain is expected on Tuesday. The first predictions for the first full week of August show that a new heat wave may be on the way.

Weatherman Robert de Vries also showed in his recent video know rain is followed by rising temperatures.
