EU will not relax conditions

1 September 2018 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The Brexit negotiations between the United Kingdom (UK) and the European Union (EU) are not yet close to a breakthrough. A source told Business Insider. On Friday, August 31, the two parties continued negotiations in Brussels.

The press suggested that the EU might relax the conditions. This was due to statements by Michel Barnier and French President Emmanuel Macron. However, officials in Brussels weren't sure how quickly to quell those rumors.

They pointed out that the EU has been willing to make a deal like we've never seen before, as long as borders are respected. "The agreement should not come at the expense of who we are. We must preserve and protect what makes us." said Barnier on the German radio station Deutschlandfunk.

'Barnier has 100% support'
French European Affairs Minister Nathalie Loiseau was also surprised at the suggestion in the British press that Macron busy would have exercised to relax the EU position. "First, Barnier has 100% support from member states," she told Today. "Secondly, Macron did not say anything new. He said that in the future the EU should be reformed into a unit that maintains relations with countries outside the EU."

According to Loiseau, Macron already said that last year. "The problem with the current UK government proposal is that it would enjoy the benefits of Norway's rights, with Canada's duties. But there has to be a good balance between rights and obligations," Loiseau added.

Northern Ireland Agreement
The two sides must come to an agreement on the thorny issue: the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland. What happens to that border if it is not possible to conclude a deal on the future trade relationship? The EU and the UK have not yet reached an agreement, the source told Business Insider.

And that while there are only about 6 weeks to go until an important summit of European government leaders. The aim was initially to reach an agreement on Brexit in October, but there is a good chance that this will not happen at the earliest. november happens.
