Income support for British farmers disappears

13 September 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn - 1 reaction

Subsidies in the form of income support per hectare will be phased out in the United Kingdom in order to disappear by 2027. That is in the new agricultural policy of the British. Instead, there will be a system of subsidies for social services.

The new policy is mainly aimed at rewarding measures that are beneficial to the environment and nature. In the long run, the farmers will have to sign a contract that describes in detail exactly how they are going to take those measures.

The same amount of money available
However, it remains unknown whether the same amount of money will go to the agricultural sector as compared to the European Common Agricultural Policy. Michael Gove, Secretary of Rural Affairs, told Farmers Weekly that the introduction of the new policy will mean a better future for farmers.

The minister also said that it is good that the British agricultural sector has the opportunity to lay the foundations for a green Brexit. This after the sector has been bound by difficult and outdated rules for almost 50 years. Gove doesn't like the current European agricultural policy. "The largest landowners get the most money in this, without any public services in return."

The last sentence in particular hits the nail on the head, 15% of recipients touch 75% of CAP money in the EU. And those (green) services are what Brussels asks in the same way. British farmers, on the other hand, will be able to export much more competitively with a lower pound. And that's what you want, don't you, living off your production?
You can no longer respond.
