British Sugar announces lower beet price

13 September 2018 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

British Sugar has agreed with the British farmers' union NFU what the contract price for beet will be for 2019. It is reported, among other things, that beet growers receive a minimum price of more than €21 per tonne (converted to euros).

There will be no deduction for tare in the form of the beet head, bringing the final price to almost €23 per tonne. This means that the price is almost €3 lower than in 2018. Beet growers do receive a higher market bonus than last year (+5%). The growers receive this market bonus when the worldwide sugar price is above €375 per tonne.

Difficult market conditions
The fact that the price is no longer deducted from the aforementioned tare will apply to all contracts from now on. The British representative of the beet growers (NFU sugar) says that he is satisfied with this price. This is due to the difficult market conditions, with low sugar prices.

From 2019 there will no longer be a possibility for 3-year contracts. According to the British beet growers, difficulties will arise because neonicotinoids may no longer be used.
