Uienhandel.com was the first (online) onion broker to organize various onion tenders in May and July. On Friday 21 September, the company will launch a new tender. In this tender it is possible for growers to participate in a possible price increase.
Machiel Boons of Uienhandel.com indicates that this way of marketing onions went very well at the time. "Growers like to choose when they trade. With multiple sales moments, growers keep control in their own hands," says Boons.
Market-based price
Uienhandel.com chooses not only to put out tenders at the beginning of the season, but also to create several sales moments during the season. The condition is, however, that the tender offers a market price. "We were able to find a processor who was willing to go along with this. Especially the possibility to participate at the top of the stock exchange quotations makes this tender attractive."
If onion prices rise in the coming months, a grower can keep up with this increase. The tender has a floor of €30 (delivery January). If stock prices rise in the coming weeks, a grower can participate for 50% on the top of the stock exchange listing in his/her region.
