The first cases of several weeds that have developed resistance to glyphosate have been reported in the United Kingdom (UK). Researchers have called for "wise" handling of the herbicide.
The grassy 'Ray dravik', it is a weed that is a serious problem in the UK. According to researchers at Rothamsted Research, this weed is less and less sensitive to glyphosate. "The grass species develops a resistance to glyphosate," the researchers report Farmer's Weekly.
Problems in other countries
It is the first time that resistance has been reported in the United Kingdom. In many other countries (such as the United States, Brazil and Argentina) resistance to the herbicide is already a major problem. There, however, glyphosate is generally used much more frequently and in greater amounts (in combination with glyphosate-tolerant crops).
The risk of developing resistance was estimated to be low in the UK due to the lower use of the product and often in combination with other herbicides. "The fact that resistance is now developing is because the drug is used more often," the researchers say.
