Tractor driver's license excludes foreign trainees

4 October 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

The tractor driving license means that foreign trainees and students in the Netherlands are no longer allowed to use the tractor on public roads. Members of Parliament Helma Lodders and Remco Dijkstra (VVD) asked parliamentary questions about it.

The tractor driver's license, which was introduced in 2015, means that a driver of a tractor is only allowed on the public road if he/she has such a driver's license or car driver's license (from before 2005). However, foreign interns and students are often so young that they do not qualify for this.

Unworkable situation
This creates an unworkable situation, because students cannot drive to various plots (separated by a public road) with the tractor. As a result, many students are no longer able to work with farmers in the Netherlands, so reported Broadcasting Flevoland† In other countries in the European Union (EU) you can drive as soon as you have a car driver's license.

Lodders and Dijkstra have now submitted parliamentary questions to Minister Carola Schouten (Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality). They want an explanation of the laws and regulations surrounding the tractor driving licence. They also want the minister's opinion on the situation with the foreign trainees.
