News Broad weather insurance

Loss for Vereinigte Hail due to drought

21 November 2018 - Anne Jan Doorn

Insurance company Vereinigte Hagel has to pay out more damage than has been received in premium for the first time this year. This has to do with the fact that broad weather insurance has often been called upon this season.

More than 80% of the farmers who have taken out insurance with Vereinigte Hagel submitted a claim for damages this year. This is mainly due to last summer's drought. The majority of these damage reports have now been paid out.

No problems for Vereinigte Hagel
Because Vereinigte Hagel is a European cooperative, it has no direct consequences for the company. "We work in 10 countries and in other countries there is less damage, that cancels out each other," said Jan Schreuder, the director of the cooperative. RTV Noord.

Schreuder emphasizes that it is important that more Dutch farmers participate in the broad weather insurance. "I see it as a structural solution, which gives farmers quick liquidity when needed."

Abolition of insurance tax
The first step to make broad weather insurance more attractive is to abolish the insurance tax from 21%. State Secretary Menno Snel (Finance) has already announced that if it is up to him, this tax will disappear in 2020. However, the European Commission must first approve this.
