Edwin Burgers: 'First divide then multiply'

4 July 2019

Edwin Burgers has been active in the futures markets his entire business life. This started in 1990 after he completed the higher agricultural school in Dronten. Then he started as a broker in agricultural futures contracts at Wegeterm. There he learned all facets of futures trading and price risk management in detail. It also became clear to him from day one that knowledge and information about the markets is the catalyst for futures market trading and crucial for good risk management. That has always remained the case, despite the fact that the agricultural markets have changed enormously.

Edwin DCA started in 2005. DCA stands for Services Center Agricultural Market. These services initially focused on the futures market trade in potatoes, pigs and grains. The associated information and knowledge was offered by various newsletters. This has further developed into the leading knowledge platform www.boerenbusiness.nl with 115.000 unique visitors per month.

Knowledge sharing in the field of risk management in the agricultural sector has been taking place from DCA for many years through training and knowledge sessions.

Over the years, Edwin has increasingly become a partner of the agribusiness by helping them with risk management issues and the translation thereof to the farmer's practice. After all, for every well-running market you need buyers and suppliers. That bridging function suits Edwin and DCA well. For example, the click contract for potatoes has become a great success. Potato growers can conclude a contract with a buyer whereby the latter offers the grower the option of fixing his price at a later date. This at a price that is based on the then prevailing rate on the futures market. This concept has been developed jointly by growers and buyers under the direction of DCA. The export and registration of this clicking is done by DCA, which also provides the necessary knowledge and market information for the growers.

Edwin is available as a consultant and sounding board and is happy to use his knowledge and years of experience in the sector. Just like his entrepreneurship, which allows him to easily switch between board and farmer and knows how to set and achieve goals.
