News Irrigation ban

Irrigation prohibited in Twente and Achterhoek

18 July 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn

It is very dry in the Achterhoek and Twente. That is why the Rijn en IJssel and Vechtstromen water boards prohibit the abstraction of water from surface water, and in some cases water may no longer be pumped up.

From Thursday 18 July, 12 noon, it is prohibited to collect water from streams, ditches and ponds in parts of the areas of both water boards. The exact locations can be found at the website of the Rhine and IJssel water board. For the Vechtstromen water board, 60% of the area is no longer allowed to irrigate.

Low groundwater levels
The Rijn en IJssel water board writes that it may not be as warm as last year, but that it is almost as dry. Water levels are lower than normal at this time of year and groundwater levels are low to very low. The precipitation deficit has risen to more than 220 millimeters, which is comparable to 2018.

The ban is not entirely unexpected. At 80% of the waterways, water was no longer allowed to be extracted from the ditches, because no water flowed over the next weir. The water boards indicate that they will take strict action if the ban is violated.
