The percentage of flower bulb growers that want to expand increased by more than 2018% in 13. At the end of 2018, 27,6% were willing to expand, compared to 14,5% a year earlier. The percentage of quitters decreases slightly. AgriDirect reports that.
The percentage of expanders is the highest in hyacinth cultivation at 37,8%. At 24,6%, lily growers are the least willing to expand or have their business followed up. The figures are based on AgriDirect's annual Flower Bulb Scanner, which took place at the end of 2018/beginning of 2019.
With the expansion plans almost doubling, the flower bulb sector has once again found its way up, according to AgriDirect. In the period 2013-2015 an increasing trend was seen in the percentage of extenders. This trend was broken in 2016.
Percentage of quitters drops slightly
The percentage of quitters will decrease slightly in 2018, 0,8% compared to 2017. The number of companies that want to stop or slowly phase out is at 5,7% highest among tulip growers. In hyacinths, only 2,2% of growers have plans to end their business.
In total, 34,5% of Dutch flower bulb companies are counting on a successor. That is slightly more than in 2017 (33,2%). At 15,9% of the companies a successor is ready to take over the baton, at 18,6% the successor has already been included in the partnership.
Restraint in Lilies
René le Clercq of the KAVB trade association recognizes a number of trends. “The lily market is complicated at the moment. We see that reflected in a declining acreage and in the reticence of these growers.” In the tulips, half of the flower bulb area, the tenor is mainly positive, according to Le Clercq. “We expect the growth in cut tulips to continue in the coming years. For hyacinth cultivation, among other things, the market has been stable for a number of years. That offers confidence to continue or take over the company.”
