Friesland scraps nitrogen rules after protest

11 October 2019 - Wouter Baan - 10 comments

The Frisian farmers who demonstrate at the provincial government building in Leeuwarden on Friday 11 October do not have to go home empty-handed. The province has decided to withdraw the nitrogen measures.

Johannes Kramer, the deputy of the province of Friesland, will let you know at the beginning of the afternoon. "We have just decided to withdraw the current nitrogen measures in order to make way for rules that have been developed together with the farmers," he reports to Omroep Friesland.

Demonstrations in Friesland and Brabant
Hundreds of farmers protested at the provincial government house in both Friesland and North Brabant. The reason is the intended nitrogen policy of the provinces. A spokesperson for the province of Friesland reports that the first farmers had arrived at the provincial house in Leeuwarden around 11:30 am.

It is reported that several tens to hundreds of farmers with tractors have gone to the provincial house of their province. These farmers are furious because the province has single-handedly tightened its nitrogen policy. For example, the latent space is taken up if external netting is to take place.

Packed full provincial house
Protests are also underway in North Brabant at the provincial government. Here's a debate on nitrogen policy today. The hall, with space for approximately 350 people, is packed. In the run-up to this, interest group ZLTO has called on farmers to attend en masse.

That's the way it should be. Clear signal but achieving something through an adult conversation.

That is democracy, if the majority votes for parties that are in favor of tightening the nitrogen policy, then it is also good that that happens :). Demonstrate stupidly, it will only reduce the support from society.

Even in a democracy you are not allowed to discriminate, not even if it is a farmer, it is also a human being who can have rights

Why did the province decide? Other reports state that Minister Schouten has called back the provinces...

Farmers are a minority, who need to be protected, just like the other minorities in NL.

they let themselves be sent away with a hole in the bag! do they really think that national policy will be adjusted after a decision by the Council of State. the only way to get out of all this climate bullshit is to ignore all the subsidies and go our own way. because without RVO they have nothing to report about our companies! clothes there in The Hague and Brussels

that is why all sectors must make themselves heard, because there is something going on everywhere.

Dear people, farmers of the Netherlands, I wish you every success with the actions and that you may get the respect and result that you deserve.
Go on and push hard, because friendly, reasonable people are not listened to. They do not know that language in The Hague and Brussels. Those folks there are out of this world either. Those guys are dangerous. But you can handle them with common sense, that's all you need. I sympathize with you, who for years and years had to swallow the terror of the government. You will succeed!
Greeting!
