News Farmers protest

'If the cabinet does nothing, we will come back'

16 October 2019 - Redactie Boerenbusiness - 44 comments

The farmers no longer make any concessions in the nitrogen policy. This is what Sieta van Keimpema, the spokesman for the Farmers Defense Force, said on Wednesday, October 16 in The Hague at the national farmers' protest. The group, the organizer of the event, demands that the cabinet's nitrogen policy is completely off the table.

"If that doesn't happen, we'll be back here in 2 weeks," said Van Keimpema. However, she mainly focused on taking up the latent space, which is labeled as theft. "No one would allow the empty rooms of our house to be taken away. That's what happens." She is clear about the solution: "Solve the paper problems you have caused yourself."

Pig farmer Johnny Hogenkamp added this on stage: "How sad that on October 1 was heard, but not listened. Schouten offended the farmers by doing this. We are more than tired of all those rules."

Threshold up
Mark van den Oever, founder Farmers Defense Force, confirms that the organization wants to organize another protest in 2 weeks if the cabinet sticks to the current policy. "Our demand is that we want the Belgian or the German model." In those models, the threshold value of nitrogen is much higher.

Van den Oever is very pleased with the turnout. Farmers have flocked to The Hague en masse. "The turnout is twice as much." According to him, 'a few thousand' farmers stay overnight in The Hague. A farmer/citizen debate is also on the agenda on Thursday 17 October. According to Van Keimpema, this is a saving grace from the farmers for the nuisance they have caused.

Tractor symbol of resistance
Thierry Baudet, party leader of the Forum of Democracy, and Theo Hiddema, also addressed the farmers. Baudet repeated the call he at Boerenbusiness did by arguing (like Van den Oever) for a higher threshold value for nitrogen. Hiddema in turn praised the farmers and spoke of the 'tractor as a symbol of resistance'. "Just make sure that that trigger isn't fodder for your political opponents to trick you."

Geert Wilders, the leader of the PVV, addressed the farmers with a variant of his infamous Moroccan statement. "Do you want more or less nitrogen rules?" he started his speech. After a loud 'less' came the response "Then we'll arrange that." Wilders called on farmers to continue with the demonstration. "The future of your company and your children is in danger. There is no better reason to protest than that."

He also pointed out that nitrogen emissions from agriculture have already fallen dramatically in recent years. "Why is nobody talking about that? We don't have a problem with nitrogen, but with politicians who want to kill the peasantry."

Do you want more or less Neo Liberal right-wing populist mood making??? With false promises against measures that will be implemented sooner or later.

We want decent treatment that is legally correct. So taking up N space = compensating in line with the market. Building houses then pay agricultural land as building land. No more theft of farm property by the Rutte/Bilderberg clan.

Doesn't matter @Maxwell, in the end the left did it anyway......

Geert and Thierry started stirring up the crowd like flies this afternoon, as if they had once done something for the farmers (on the contrary with their nexit ideas: no subsidies and export market).
Ton Westgeest 16 October 2019
The balance of paid idlers and hard-working people must be restored. The balance is lost!

If we have to use the right for that, so be it....

From the left we know for sure that we shouldn't expect anything from that!!

Fortunately, the majority of the public agrees with us…

And that is not adf with the left parties? They no longer want an export market, only produce for the local citizen. D66? They even want to feed the Dutch mouths with products from the Ukraine and Brazil, thereby wiping livestock and agriculture off the map. Time will tell which is best. No farmer wants to rely solely on government infusion or subsidies. When doors of subsidies close, others open again. If that means less interference from the government and citizens with regard to my company and fewer rules, I'll sign for it.

Maxwell, get to work boy. Instead of knowing everything better here.
Maybe a world will open up for you.
At least if someone wants such a sad horn.

Kick Schouten out first. Leave us completely in the lurch, instead of standing on the barricades together with the farmers.

Ans 16 October 2019
Why. Nobody compares 1986 to now. 30 years difference. 800,000 fewer cows. 5 million fewer pigs. More than half fewer farmers. The animals of those farmers who quit have ended up in low-emission stables. The amount of manure per ha has dropped from 350 kg phosphate to 70 kg. As a result, emissions are already reduced by 70%. In the same 30 years, the industry has doubled and the number of cars has doubled and Schiphol has doubled. And yet they come with emissions. The farmers do 50% and the car 6% and the industry 6% and Schiphol 0,06%

there is no nitrogen problem! first create nature reserves everywhere with tax money, and now the farmers have to leave with tax money. It should be calculated what this left-wing madness costs. Just trying to kill 2 important sectors, agriculture and construction, what are we doing?

Totally agree!

Keep it up farmers, don't let your life's work be destroyed by a bunch of crazy idiots in the hague, with many of you the farming business has been in the family for generations and it must remain so so that your future is also secured for the next generation, and can continue to provide you the Netherlands and the rest of the world with good food.

just paralyzing the whole of the Netherlands is not that difficult .... that will be the next step because europe rules really don't work .... you can't erase something that has always been there..... nl you can't compare with greece or spain ... nothing grows in the south so how do you solve it simple there is nothing left of winter ....

The small Netherlands 2nd export country for agricultural products is unsustainable in my opinion.

The many poor nature reserves with the Natura 2000 stamp are often caused by humans themselves. If you do nothing at all, this poor country will automatically become richer in nitrogen, resulting in forests. Nature itself takes care of this equalization. This process also occurs without any human interference. How natural is it to keep moors lean by regularly cutting off the heather and cutting down trees? To shut down the whole country because this artificial nature has to be preserved at all costs is completely unnatural. The solution is therefore simple. Remove those Natura 2000 stamps and the problem is solved.

There were quite a few trucks demonstrating along yesterday. I don't think they have it at all in Denhaag that, with all the windmills and gas, failed ground-heating systems, etc., that the citizens of the environment are now also fed up with shit. In London, travelers have taken environmental activists off the grid in a less pleasant way. So it's not just here. Don't be fooled. Continue with actions, you had and you still have my support..

The farmers protest. Construction at risk. Hospitals will soon be on strike Truckers who ride with our farmers. The fishing that has been paralyzed. Dissatisfaction and yet we Dutch are labeled as a happy people. Hmmm. Did I forget something? Good day.

I'm getting involved in various farmers' discussion on the Farmers Business website because a lot of you farmers here are just talking with prejudice here. You approach everything purely out of your own interest.
I think that's always been the case. When you farm well and earn a lot of money (yes also a lot of EU subsidy money) then we don't hear anything. But as soon as someone points out that the Dutch "Plof Agriculture" is growing out of its seams, you rage like mad???
Yes and now people like me have to slow down and give a lot of you a much needed reality check....yes shake it up a bit!!!
I am 100 percent for the preservation of the beautiful farm family business....that has sometimes existed for decades or more...only your greed for growth, growth, growth is going to kill you and put an end to this!
And dear people, that's your own fault big bump.

You are entrepreneurs...so change with the world. Stop thinking in mega stables and expanding?? Switch to better organic farming that is truly sustainable.
That is modern and can also feed many people. Crazy what some idiots claim that organic sustainable agriculture (agroecology) is a meaningless hobbyism!!
Who says that??? Your own LTO and other petty organizations that have no business sense.
Take a good look at a healthy organic farm and wake up!!!!

Or what his own positive contribution is with regard to the environment, living environment and diversity. Let's review that first.
As if as a farmer I have to answer to the first idiot who thinks he has a monopoly on wisdom without giving any substantiation of his own achievements. Too crazy for words of course. Nothing easier than measuring others from the sidelines (or in your case from behind your keyboard). A lot will have to happen before I set to work with an all-destroying burner with propane tank at the front to burn down my field to the ground. I can tell you that.

Dear Maxwell, Greed? Survival is no , in the past 60 farmers in our polder , now only 10 , the rest could not sustain . System of market forces is the cause of growing companies. Grow bigger or die , that is the choice .
Maxwell 18 October 2019
OK I give up. Always try to explain that this is untenable (current agricultural model with large farms, huge fields of monoculture and mega stables)
Then keep going and ensure the bankruptcy of the farmers and the exodus on the land.
But if you nail my living environment, I'll hit you hard. Legally then of course because I don't use violence!!! And maybe I will win!! Together with many millions of Dutch people who are also very concerned about climate change, air pollution .. poison egg scandals, manure fraud, food scandals, mega stable fires carcinogenic pesticides, lifeless depleted agricultural soils
Remember one thing there are more concerned citizens than self-righteous peasants (who only ever stand up for their own interest BUT NEVER FOR THE GENERAL INTEREST.
THAT'S JUST EGOISTIC.
Maxwell 18 October 2019
It's about time the true facts about farmers surfaced...
17 percent of all dairy farmers are millionaires, the average farmer earns more than the average working Dutch person.
Placing windmills on your farm yields tens of thousands of euros per windmill...
And just keep crying
unbelievable
Also the fact that (almost) all farmers here (with the exception of a few smart farmers with real knowledge) react very aggressively and short-sighted (with all kinds of nasty wishes and comments about links, environmental rascals, civil servants, ministers, highly educated people, foreigners etc. .etc etc etc is a big shame
Be a bit stupid at me for exposing the painful truth!!
I have always said that I also farm them for healthy farmers BUT NOT ON THIS DEAD-END road of industrial agriculture on a mega scale in our small frog country
Not going
Maxwell 18 October 2019
It is necessary that Dutch farmers and their advocates rediscover their moral compass and embrace stewardship (again). Just like other sectors and companies, agriculture must be held to the principles of 'people, planet, profit'
And just like other sectors, agriculture must change in order to have a future in the Netherlands, Europe and the world.

Congratulations Maxwell, you can carry on.
Maybe follow the media of the last few weeks. Instead of typing nonsense here that is not substantiated. If you know it all so well, I don't understand why you don't become an organic farmer yourself!!

PS the average farmer also works more hours than the average Dutch person. I also doubt if he deserved more.

@maxwell
How are you going to convince all those millions of suburbanites to stop throwing the cheapest in their shopping carts?
How are you going to convince those people to give up most of their luxuries in order to afford food grown to your standards?
How are you going to convince politicians not to import anything that is not grown according to your standards.
Start suggesting decent solutions for this or else shut up.
Drent 19 October 2019
@macwell, these actions are mainly not about money but about our life in the countryside and about the continued existence of our age-old family property and no that is not for sale as the hague wants. I don't want money there I'm not a farmer but decent rules to work with and fair trade and no rubbish from abroad on the shelves here.
Maxwell 19 October 2019
I will also stop posting messages and advice on your Boeren business forum.
There is no point in trying to convince you further to switch to a real sustainable farming system (read organic farming)
Then soon experience the harsh reality for yourself when your desired completely unsustainable industrial agricultural system completely collapses.
I may not appear again for a few years when I have been proved right and everyone is busy switching to sustainable organic farming.

Goodbye and good luck with your brutally violent and above all self-centered farmer demonstration. Until the rest of the Netherlands is completely fed up with your nonsense!!

The best Maxwell is right or wrong is no reason to criticize him or his opinion with terms that do not belong. Suppose he is right, then it means that there are simply no farmers left. Because there is simply no market for such a range of organic products. And certainly not with open borders like now . Imports from abroad do fill the market with cheap food from abroad . And sometimes from countries where you put a question mark on food safety. And dear Maxwell the food scandals are not caused by the farmers but by suppliers and customer processors . And if a little dairy farmer does not have equity of a million then it is not here to stay in the long term . Because 20 acres of land is about that million that makes them millionaires . But it takes more than that . In fact , there are those who are dairy farmers who own many millions . But these unfortunately have not earned with their dairy business more with other business . Count these off and you can cross off most of your millionaires. I don't want to kick you and I don't want to make fun of you. But it would be so nice if things could be done less and if it were easier to transfer the company to a successor . But unfortunately , the frontrunners survive because they are up to the competition from the world market . So one does not participate is the switch to your idea . But since this market is not big enough , this is only possible to a limited extent . Either now or in the long run bleed to death or stop . And believe me if there is more demand for organic products then farmers will switch to that part of the market again . Only I doubt and I think many with me in how far that is biologically more sustainable than many other products. And then you abstain from advice and try to convince farmers and warnings. I am convinced that this nitrogen case will only lead to the companies becoming even bigger and more intensive . Because all environmental measures have only led to more costs . And in small companies, these peer units are too high to invest, so stop. And since biologically also emits nitrogen, the question is what will happen there. And with an unreliable government and a bank that wants to earn money from you and therefore wants to see its money back in time. The question is which companies have a future. You dare to give your vision and you warn . I want to give a vision but not warn . My vision is that when we are 1 generations further, there is no farmer left who can earn a living from his company without an additional activity or function next to it and the farm will attract more attention from ancillary activity or an addition to the environment that yields something. And is food production in the hands of the big boys and they more or less determine what the consumer eats and pays
