Gelderland suspends nitrogen measures

The province of Gelderland is suspending the nitrogen measures for the time being. In any case, no new permits will be granted to farmers until December 1, the council has decided.

By suspending these nitrogen measures, there should be more room for a clear plan of approach. At the moment there is still a lot of uncertainty about the national approach to nitrogen and the provincial rules. Minister Carola Schouten (Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality) and the provinces will meet by 1 December at the latest together to look into the matter. The provincial government also wants to talk to various representatives of the agricultural sector.

Peter Drenth, deputy of the province of Gelderland, said last week that he would suspend all nitrogen measures during the protest. The college agreed to this on Tuesday, October 22. "The nitrogen problem is a very heavy matter. We have to find a route together to solve it," said Drenth at Omroep Gelderland. Schouten has in the room indicated that they and the provinces try to clarify the discussion, the different definitions of the rules and their consequences by 1 December at the latest.

Drenth also emphasizes that the policy rules that have been established now are emergency measures to allow permits to be granted again at a later date. "How we are going to solve the problem in the longer term and what contribution will come from all sectors in our society, we will only know in May/June next year when the Remkes committee presents its latest report."
