Emergency law by the Senate, farmers in protest

17 December 2019 - Kimberly Bakker

The Senate passed the emergency nitrogen law on Tuesday evening, December 17. This means that the law will be piloted through the Senate before the Christmas holidays. It was clear in the House that the law cannot count on everyone's approval. A group of farmers had drawn tractors to the Binnenhof to protest.

In recent weeks it has been tense whether the emergency law would be passed in the Senate, because various opposition parties wondered whether the law would be legally feasible and the coalition in the Senate no majority has. Thanks to the support of 50Plus, the SGP and faction Otten, a majority has been achieved.

Now that the emergency nitrogen law has been passed by the Senate, the law will be piloted through the Senate before the Christmas holidays. As a result, all the lights are green and the cabinet can speed up housing construction. This is what it wants in the agricultural sector among other things do with various rules for low-nitrogen feed, a 'nitrogen registration system' and the introduction of a threshold value for nitrogen emissions.

Farmers in protest
It was also clear in the Senate that the emergency law cannot count on everyone's approval. A group of farmers had traveled to the Binnenhof with tractors to express their displeasure. In addition, the farmers (who mainly come from the Groene Hart) let it be known that this is an individual action and not an action from within. Farmers Defense Force† That organization called off all actions earlier today.

After the vote, the president of the senate has asked the members of the Senate to leave the Binnenhof via the Mauritshuis. The other side is blocked by farmers. In the meantime, the police and Marechaussee are trying to prevent the farmers from moving further towards the Binnenhof (and the parliament buildings). It is also frequently read on social media that armored vehicles are on the way and that even more tractors from all over the country are expected.
