Ctgb limits authorization for 2 glyphosate agents

19 December 2019 - Anne Jan Doorn - 1 reaction

The Board for the Authorization of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb) recently decided to reject the authorization of 1 glyphosate product. The authorization of another substance has been severely restricted. These are the first decisions of the Ctgb in a reassessment round of glyphosate-containing products.

After the European Union extended the use of glyphosate-containing products for 2017 years (instead of 5 years) in 10, it was also decided that all these products should be re-evaluated on national markets. That review round has now started. The plea that the Ctgb rejected is Kyleo (15471 N). This product has been rejected on the basis of risks to aquatic organisms and not because of risks to humans.

Etna next
The other glyphosate agent, Etna Next, also poses no risks to humans. The majority of the applications requested are not admissible. This is because data is lacking to demonstrate an acceptable risk for non-target arthropods (including spiders and insects) and in many cases also not for birds or mammals.

Safe use has been demonstrated for the requested applications as a coating treatment in beets and maize. This against potato storage, and spot-by-spot treatments against weeds.
