Vlogging farmers are conquering the internet

31 December 2019 - Niels van der Boom - 2 comments

Vlogging, keeping a video diary, is nothing new on the internet. The phenomenon has been around for 20 years, but only really became popular when Youtube came up. The agricultural sector has also found this way. Especially in the US, some popular farmers are now earning more from videos than from their business.

In the Netherlands, when you think of vlogging, you quickly think of young people talking and screaming quickly and unintelligibly, serving a young audience. But, vlogs come in all shapes and sizes and for all audiences. Popular vloggers, such as Enzo Knol, have also found the agricultural sector.

Hundreds of thousands of followers
One of the farmers who literally farms well online is Zach Johnson. A 34-year-old farmer from the US state of Minnesota. He is known on Youtube as Millenial Farmer, with more than 400.000 followers. This makes him probably the biggest farmer vlogger. Another well-known in internet land is the Welker family from Montana. With their Big Bud articulated tractors and prairie farm they have now managed to acquire 317.000 followers.

Johnson's internet career was launched by 1 video, so tells he told news channel CNBC. He started his channel in April 2016, but it only became popular at the end of 2017. Then it went fast. The Millenial Farmer now acts as a guest speaker, organizes company visits and lends itself to sponsor deals. In addition, there is a line with merchandising. All things that make him money. Manufacturers are queuing up to offer free products in exchange for a video. An example is the well-known substance WD-40.

Big income
The entrepreneur does not reveal anything about his income from this branch. According to YouTube experts, this amounts to an amount of $2.500 to $5.000 per month in advertising revenue. Then all sponsor deals are added. His own caps and shirts sold 2.000 copies in just 6 days after opening his online shop. As a result, he says that he now earns 5 times more from vlogging than from his arable farm.

According to YouTube expert Joe Gagliese, the secret of the Millenial Farmer is that he has a very loyal following. The audience feels connected and often comes back. In total, the videos have been viewed more than 70 million times. "Johnson has his own identity. He is not just some prankster or fitness guru. The agricultural sector is also an important niche. People outside of agriculture are curious about what is happening in the countryside. The videos appeal to everyone. He shows interested parties a world that normally never get to see them."

English language advantage
It is mainly English-speaking farmers who reap success on Youtube. In addition to a language advantage, there is a lot of interest in their type of companies, which often farm on a large scale. There are also many vloggers in the Netherlands. However, the videos are almost all in Dutch. That doesn't make them less interesting, but it often results in fewer followers.

Is there no great Dutch success at all? Yes it is. With more than 1 million subscribers, the Dutch channel may tractor spotter call themselves the largest agricultural YouTube channel in the world. The most viewed video has no less than 75 million views. Numbers 2 and 3 are 46 million and 43 million views. These are numbers that make even popular artists jealous.
