Some 5.000 German farmers are protesting today (Monday 6 January) at the CSU party congress in Bavaria. They come with approximately 3.000 tractors to the meeting of the Christian Democrats to express their dissatisfaction with the imminent tightened manure policy in Germany.
The German government plans to lower fertilizer standards in many federal states. According to many farmers, this is unnecessary and is at the expense of crop yields.
The farmers hope for political support. In the run-up to the meeting, the CSU made a case for farmers by labeling them as an important pillar in German society. The CSU is only active in Bavaria, but goes nationally with the ruling party CDU of Chancellor Angela Merkel and is therefore influential.
warning fire
Around noon, the protesting farmers light a warning fire near the monastery where the party congress is taking place. The farmers in Bavaria are supported by the advocacy organization Bayerischer Bauernverband.
