Livestock farmer in Brabant gets a postponement from the province

17 February 2020 - Chanti Oussoren

Livestock farmers in Brabant will be given a postponement until January 1, 2021 to apply for a permit for an environmentally friendly barn. This has been decided by the Provincial Council with a large majority. This is a return to the earlier decision taken in 2017.

The last date for applying for permits used to be April 1, 2020, this has now been moved to January 1, 2021. The latest date by which the housing systems must be adjusted has been moved from January 1, 2022 to October 1, 2022. housing systems that are older than 15 or 20 years.

There is a separate regulation for innovative stable systems that have not yet been fully developed. A date shift to 1 January 2021 also applies to the decision to participate. However, the realization date can be deviated from if the Provincial Executive deems this necessary.

Pros and cons
The PVV, SGP/CU and Local Brabant argued in an amendment to roll back to the original deadline of 2028. This amendment was rejected. Most parties, however, felt that a delay was necessary. The SP and the PvdD did not consider the postponement necessary and were therefore opposed to the debate. The VVD was in favor of the postponement and even wanted to shift the deadline to the year 2024. This is because the deadline of January 1 is almost in sight when consultations with the parties involved have been completed.

New policy
According to States member Wil van Pinxteren, the decision for postponement has created more realism. In Lokaal Brabant's argument, he acknowledged that the deadline of April 1 would be an almost impossible task for livestock farmers. Rick Grashoff (GroenLinks) indicated that a delay of 9 months is an interim proposal. He wants to consult agricultural and environmental partners within 2 months to discuss a new policy.
