The first round of the renewed SDE++ subsidy scheme will open at the end of 2020. The first round of this subsidy scheme will be opened from September 29 to October 22, 2020.
In addition to the techniques for renewable energy production, CO2-reducing techniques are also eligible for subsidy in the SDE++. The cabinet is making €5 billion available for this subsidy round. That is what the central government made on Monday 17 February known.
SDE++ works - just like the predecessor SDE+ - as an auction opening in phases. The maximum subsidy requirement for which projects can be submitted increases per phase. This method encourages applicants to submit the lowest possible subsidy. The techniques for the subsidy round are technique-neural. This means that all technologies get a fair chance for subsidy. This creates competition between the technologies as cost reduction and innovation are encouraged.
CO2 reduction
With the subsidy for CO2-reducing techniques, the government wants to achieve the target for 2030. The target is to emit 2030% less CO49 by 2 than in 1990. That is why the SDE++ scheme also includes CO2 reducing techniques, instead of only techniques for renewable energy production.
A number of new techniques will be added to the SDE++ scheme. These are CCS (CO2 capture and storage), industrial residual heat, heat pumps, electric boilers and hydrogen production through electrolysis. The maximum subsidy requirement that technologies can claim under the scheme is €300 per tonne of CO2.
There are ceilings for a number of techniques within the scheme. These ceilings limit the production of, or expenditure on, a particular technique or sector. This is to prevent all money from going to 1 sector. There is a ceiling for CCS solar and wind energy on land and the expenditure on CO2-reducing techniques in industry.
