Remediation of asbestos roofs no further

24 February 2020 - Niels van der Boom - 2 comments

Together with municipalities, housing cooperatives and homeowners, LTO Nederland is turning its back on Minister Stientje van Veldhoven's asbestos roof covenant. The newspaper Trouw writes this on the basis of its own research. With little support for a further approach to remediation, it is again delayed.

On 2 March, all parties involved are expected to sign a covenant for an accelerated approach to the asbestos problem. This declaration of cooperation is now in question. Trouw asked those involved about their willingness to sign. LTO, among others, shows little willingness. The Ministry of Housing and the Environment confirms the conclusions of Trouw.

LTO not consulted
“LTO was not consulted when drafting the cooperation statement,” Alfred Jansen of LTO told the newspaper. He is a portfolio holder for lease and security. “That is special, because the biggest task lies with the agricultural sector.”

The Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG), the Aedes housing association umbrella, the Home Owners Association (VEH) and the Contact Group for Asbestos Home Owners all refuse to sign the document. The organizations agree that asbestos must be remediated. However, the biggest pain point is that roof owners are largely responsible for the costs. There is insufficient financial support from the ministry. The minister does say that owners can borrow money temporarily, but does not mention any conditions for this.

Few supporters
The first room rejected Last year there was already a ban on asbestos roofs (as of 2028) submitted by Minister Van Veldhoven. The bill would mainly end up with home and roof owners. Only a few provinces and municipalities support the covenant, together with the construction and asbestos removal industry. They will place their signature on 2 March.

The minister is accused of having no vision and no room for innovation, such as cheaper remediation techniques. The industry is blocking this, according to the advocates. VEH is afraid that the ministry will soon communicate that the problem has been solved, while in reality nothing has been arranged.

As far as I know, the Agricultural Collective is important and the role of LTO is limited to history books.

Back in the day, when we didn't know any better...
