The French growers' organization UNPT warns potato growers against overproduction. For the new season, potatoes for the processing industry should only be planted if there is a guaranteed sale. 'Producing for the free market is extremely risky.'
The French potato industry is, as in The Netherlands, under considerable pressure as a result of the corona crisis. About 3 million tons of French fries potatoes are processed in France every year. Manufacturers are now announcing delays in the collection of potatoes in storage with growers.
Quality requires attention
According to the UNPT (union nationale des producteurs de pommes de terre), growers must pay extra close attention to storage conditions, especially to prevent germination. Growers are also reminded that April 8 is the final sales date for potatoes treated with CIPC.
The current potato campaign in France is expected to be delayed in July and August. Producers are urged to take their responsibility when planting the new area. “The forecast for 2020, based on the areas in 2019 and the average yield, would lead to overproduction,” the UNPT warns.
Contract cultivation
Every grower should therefore ensure that his production has a clear sales area in terms of size and quality. “Growing French fries potatoes for the open market entails an extremely high risk.” The UNPT advocates contract farming in order to maintain structure in the sector and guarantee incomes. Growers can use the standard contract that the organization makes available on its website.
