Roughage tour Week 29

Maize in bloom and those that are left behind make up for it

17 July 2020 - Redactie Boerenbusiness

The maize on the plots of the Boerenbusiness Roughage Tour has again gone through many developments in the past week. For example, the maize is in bloom on most plots.

In most fields, the corn is pollinating to make a nice cob. The maize is in bloom here and small cobs can be seen. There is still some difference to be seen on these Roughage Tour plots compared to other plots of the participants. A good example is the plot in Doetinchem. The left plot is from the Roughage Tour and is in good shape, on the right plot some holes in the maize can be seen here and there. The two plots are shown in the photo below.

Maize on clay recovers
The maize at the participants in Zeewolde and Zuidbroek started to recover a few weeks ago, but is now also starting to grow really fast. In some places, the maize in Zuidbroek has already exceeded two meters. The Zuidbroek participant is therefore very happy that the maize is not yet in bloom, but is still growing. The maize that this participant has on sandy soil has suffered less from the drought and is doing much better.

The maize on the plot in Zeewolde reaches a length of 1 metre, this maize has grown 40 centimeters in one week, according to the graph below.
