Food supplier can benefit from home worker

7 January 2021 - Kimberly Bakker

Working from home was introduced nationally in 2020 and recent research by ABN Amro shows that many Dutch people want to work from home 1 or more days a week in the future. This development offers opportunities for food suppliers, because according to research, food can play an important role in 'working from home vitally'.

For many employers it is important to keep employees 'healthy' at home as well. Research shows that nutrition can play an important role in this. For example, offering healthy food in company canteens has become increasingly important in recent years. Although those canteens have been closed for almost a year now, this development remains something that many suppliers can benefit from. For example, the fruit basket that appeared in the office in recent years can also find its way to the employee's counter.

The fact that more and more food suppliers are opting for this approach and way of thinking is also visible in the increase in direct delivery. In short: supplying a product without any intervention from a supermarket chain. A well-known example of this is the meal boxes. In particular, suppliers who usually supply catering establishments see a benefit in this.

Challenge: recover lost sales
The biggest challenge is therefore mainly in recovering the loss of turnover suffered. Closing the catering establishments has led to a loss of turnover of €2020 billion in 2,7. This means that if a choice is made to deliver products and services directly, it must be taken into account that those products must really add something to convenience, taste and originality. After all, the consumer must be willing to pay more for it.
