In the United Kingdom, the organic market has gained considerable ground over the past year. With the highest growth rate in the last 15 years and worth £2,79 billion, the organic market even outperformed the mainstream market in 2020.
The UK organic market has reached a value of £12,6 billion last year after growing sales of 2,79%. It is the highest growth rate in 15 years. In 2020, more than £50 million a week was spent on organic foods. This is evident from the Soil Association Certification's 'Organic Market Report 2021'. The British organic market even outperformed the conventional market with these figures.
In particular, the interest from consumers in healthy food with a transparent origin, according to the research agency, is a reason that more Britons have focused on the organic market in the past year. This trend will continue this year, according to these analysts, with the value of the organic market reaching £2021 billion by the end of 2,9.
Online sales
Online sales and home delivery of organic products have played a major role in the growth of the organic market. This is a turnover increase of 36,2%, which means that online sales have accounted for almost 35% of the total turnover. This is not surprising, given the lockdowns worldwide. Nearly 1 in 4 organic products were bought online last year, taking the value to almost £500 million.
The report also shows strong growth in organic supermarket sales. It increased by 12,5%. The categories with increased sales include: canned and packaged items (+19,8%), meat, fish and poultry (+16,8%) and refrigerated foods (+22,2%) .
