46 cows were stolen from a meadow in Belgium last weekend. A remarkable theft in which the damage is high.
The cows were standing on a pasture in Laiche in the province of Luxembourg in the south of Belgium. The theft took place between 16:21 PM Friday evening (April 30) and 16:30 PM on Saturday. Just before that time, the cows were still spotted in the meadow. Local residents saw lights on around 04 a.m. Friday, but no one was actually able to catch the thieves.
The estimated damage is high. The cows are of the Salers breed and the average value can be up to €1.500, depending on the slaughter maturity of the cattle.
Rare theft
The Belgian Farmers' Union describes the incident as 'a rare theft'. Sometimes a few cows are stolen from a pasture, but never such a large number. For such a major theft, several people and trucks are needed to load and transport the livestock.
An investigation has now been launched, but there is a good chance that the animals have already been transported abroad. The cows are ear tagged, so the ear tags will also show up if they are slaughtered abroad. It is quite possible that the slaughter of the livestock is done illegally.
