Network problems? This is the solution

19 May 2021

In the Netherlands, more and more companies and private individuals are seeing the benefits of producing renewable energy. Although our energy grid is one of the most reliable in the world, a grid that has to process all that generated energy requires adjustments. When the sun shines in full in the Netherlands, it is difficult to process all the energy generated. The voltage is getting too high. Result: the inverters pop out.

Almost 38% of the electricity used in the Netherlands in the month of April is generated sustainably. This is compared to 30% last year. Solar panels produced the most electricity; 13,6% of all electricity (Source: Solar Magazine, May 2021). A nice development. The downside is that due to all this energy production, the voltage on the grid is too high. Inverters are set to exceed a certain voltage as a precaution. The installation can then no longer supply the network. There is a so-called grid fail.

small consumers
A small-scale consumer (with a connection up to max. 3x80A) that balances generated energy suffers from the fact that it cannot fully supply the grid. He has the means to generate energy, he just has nowhere to put the surplus of generated energy. Where he could normally cross out the energy he buys (net) for the energy he has supplied, he now has to buy expensive energy. That's a shame!

The solution
Grid operators are working hard to transform the current energy grid into the energy flows of the future. This is a major operation that is expected to last for years to come. Luckily Energy Shift a cost-effective solution to the problem that is already interesting: a battery in the yard† A battery stores the energy that can no longer be used on the grid. Purchasing expensive energy is therefore a thing of the past: the farmer stores the electricity in his own yard.

Extra plus
Grid congestion is not the only place where a battery offers a solution. As it looks now, the government wants to phase out the netting scheme from 1 January 2023. Each year, a small-scale consumer is allowed to pay 9% less. The scheme will stop altogether in 2031. A battery is modular and can 'join' with the dismantling of the regulation. By expanding a battery by 9% every year, the entrepreneur saves the electricity himself. As a result, he does not have to buy expensive energy.

Grants
An entrepreneur who is subject to tax can make use of attractive subsidies when he invests in a battery. The Small Investment Allowance (KIA) and Energy Investment Allowance (EIA) both provide financial support. Do you combine these 2? Then that means an advantage that can be as much as 73,5%. An entrepreneur under the age of 41 can make use of the Young Farmers Subsidy (JoLa), that means a 30% subsidy on the investment, with a maximum subsidy amount of € 20.000.

Cost effective for you?
To assess whether a battery is interesting in your situation, it is important to know how much energy you need to purchase from your energy supplier. Energy Shift can estimate based on this information whether a battery is attractive to you.
