The current asbestos system is due for a redesign and the policy must become more risk-driven and innovative. This is what LTO Nederland, the association of housing corporations Aedes and Vereniging Eigen Huis argue for in a document that they submitted to informateur Mariëtte Hamer today (Wednesday 2 June).
The request is not new. Last year, LTO Nederland already called for the recommendations from the report 'Gevangen in interests' to be adopted. According to the report, the current system is insufficiently independent and offers little room for new developments.
Financial support for forced removal
Public and private interests are intertwined in the current system. In addition, there is no incentive to carry out asbestos remediation in a simpler and cheaper way. Small jobs are associated with disproportionately high costs. According to the organisations, the legislation and regulations must be proportionate to the risks that are run. They therefore call for customization with a risk-oriented approach, the stimulation of innovation and asbestos removal methods and financial support for the forced removal of asbestos.
